Tornado Cash sold crypto “privacy”; the US saw “money laundering.” - Ars Technica

Tornado didn’t want to know its customers, which included North Korean hackers. So mixers will take steps to disguise the transactions. Tornado Cash, which operated on the Ethereum blockchain, mandated that users could only deposit money into its pools in 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 ETH increments, making it far harder to spot specific amounts entering and leaving the mixer.Tornado Cash also used a complex system of "relayers" to pay the Ethereum "gas fees" charged for transactions on the network; without doing this, it would be clear which old account was paying to "mix" money into which new account. There was, for instance, the fact that the service was literally being used for money laundering by a sanctioned adversary. According to the government, the North Korean hackers of the Lazarus Group laundered hundreds of millions of dollars through Tornado Cash. They contend that Storm tried to help the crypto exchange recover its money by pointing them to blockchain analysis tools; he could not do more because it simply wasn't possible with the Tornado system, which was built for anonymity. As for regulatory compliance, Storm's defense introduced chats in which he talked about making sure Tornado Cash was "legal" so that "people wouldn’t think that it’s some kind of damned mixer.

r/saw on Reddit: Where did John get all the money?

The only one up in the air would be the Saw 2 house but what's most likely is John never put his name on it. Likely Amanda, Hoffman, Gordon, or even Logan purchased it for him via transferred cash. Either directly or under an assumed identity. I may be missing things but how did John manage to find the money to make some of the traps (I know a lot of them were made out of scrap) but like in…Saw 3's Gideon Meatpacking Plant isn't his, it's just a hideout. Saw 4 takes place at the same time in the same location. Saw 5 happens in unspecified catacombs; likely abandoned. Saw 6, abandoned Zoo Institute.Dude, it’s not a theory-the remodeled house in Saw V IS in fact the Saw II house. Strahm goes down the trap door, and walks past the bathroom door (closed shut), where there is a trail of blood on the floor from Dr.A community dedicated to the Saw franchise. Saw X out now.

r/boxoffice on Reddit: According to Variety, Saw X carries a budget of 13 million

With the exception of Saw VI and Spiral, all of these hit $100 million worldwide. The case, however, is that this franchise is very front-loaded, to the point that the fourth, fifth and sixth movie failed to hit 2x. I would literally watch a Saw film that’s just Tobin Bell as Jigsaw sitting in a room reading nursery rhymes, he’s THAT engaging in the role. He could literally be the only character in the entire movie and it would do 50 million+…. Reply · reply · Share · shaneo632 · • 2y ago · Problem is Tobin is like 80 and the cash cow will naturally end soon enough ·With the exception of Saw VI and Spiral, all of these hit $100 million worldwide. The case, however, is that this franchise is very front-loaded, to the point that the fourth, fifth and sixth movie failed to hit 2x.They actually still had trouble getting funded for 1. They made a short film for a $1000 budget after being rejected by multiple studios. Apparently it is a more abridged tight version of 1, that only clocks in at like 12 minutes. It’s also named Saw, and is free on YouTube! For small roles and cameos Sam Jackson still gets $1-2 million just for showing up. He has said if a small film interests him (either by subject or who's directing it) and/or won't take too much of his time, he can be flexible (probably as low as scale), but for a studio picture like a SAW franchise entry, he definitely got paid.

How 'Saw' became a $1 billion horror franchise after nearly going straight-to-DVD, and what the producers have planned for the future

"Spiral" has pushed the "Saw" franchise past $1 billion at the global box office. Those behind the horror series detail how it got there. Seventeen years and eight sequels later, including the recently released "Spiral: From the Book of Saw," the franchise — which is about a serial killer named Jigsaw who sets up elaborate traps for his victims — has hit $1 billion in total global box office. The duo, along with other "Saw" insiders, spoke with Insider about how the franchise has sustained itself over the years and what's to come, including a prequel movie, "Spiral" sequel, and maybe TV down the line.Since then, every "Saw" movie except the sixth has grossed more than $100 million globally. The highest budget for a "Saw" movie before "Spiral" (which cost $40 million to produce) was $20 million for the seventh entry.Since 2004, only a handful of horror franchises have hit the coveted $1 billion mark, according to data from the research company Comscore, including "Resident Evil," "It," and "The Conjuring," if we include the spinoffs of the latter. And Koules said that the "Saw" franchise has likely hit closer to $2.5 billion after accounting for home-entertainment sales.

Bitcoin firm says police shouldn't saw open Bitcoin ATMs to seize cash for scammed customers, will seek damages for destroyed machines — firm claims seizures are criminal and victimize the company | Tom's Hardware

Bitcoin Depot Chief Legal Officer, Chris Ryan, said that police departments using brute force to open Bitcoin ATMs and seize the cash inside is bordering on law enforcement overreach. Sawing them open might even be breaking banking and criminal laws, added Ryan. Bitcoin Depot Legal Chief says that police should not break open its ATMs to get scam victims' money back.Crypto ATMs are similar to regular deposit machines, wherein they accept cash and credit the same amount to your bank account. But instead of going into your account, it would instead go into your nominated wallet address. So, if someone was scammed out of their cash with a regular deposit machine, the police would not break the ATM — instead, they would coordinate with the courts and the bank to freeze the account and potentially get the money back. This should be the same pathway that victims should take when scammed through crypto.Well one thing is for sure: if sheriffs all over the place would make it a habit to recover cash from crypto ATMs, nefarious criminals would have to resort to cutting purse strings all over again. And there you know you're dealing with a bad guy. I struggle to see any benefit to crypto currencies, I stuggle even harder to find value in crypto ATMs for law abiding hard working tax payers.
